Mirror! Mirror...mirror?

My fellow practitioners

I’ve been reflecting on the term ‘to reflect on something’. Isn’t it funny how we overlook the depth of everyday terms we use when in reality they point to a deeper truth?  Telling us more than we may realize? The refection of something isn’t the real, isn’t it? For example: The reflection of your face in a mirror isn’t your face. It’s just an appearance. We may assume its referring to our actual face but it itself is made of just mirror stuff, isn’t it?

So, when we reflect on something we are not actually contemplating about what we believe we are contemplating on, but rather it’s simply a fresh happening in that moment. The reflection is fresh. It’s not even really a reflection then, is it? Its not about something. The very thing, the thought material or makeup of it is just that. It appears to be reflecting on something but it’s made of thought stuff that has no actual link to anything else. Even if we believe it is pointing to something or referring to something real, it’s simply another thought. The same thought stuff, whatever that is. It not like they appear on some permanent mirror-like surface either. Can you find such a layer beneath thought? Or is that simply an ingrained idea?

So, as you can see, this piece of writing may appear to be reflecting on the term ‘to reflect on something’ but is it though?

What if you don’t grab another though? Right now! What do you see? A blog post? A bunch of letters? A screen? Are you sure? If you don’t use thoughts to describe what you see, what is it? And even if you do get thoughts like ‘these are symbols or shapes and colours’ do those thoughts refer to what appears to be seen? Or are they just as unknowably present as whatever is in your vision? And what ‘vision’ without interpreting it as such? And what ‘interpretation’ without believing in it to be so?

Let’s use this analogy. You seem to be reading a blog post on a site. Are there letters on a page? Truly? Or are they made of one and the same stuff? How do you separate the letters and the white space we refer to as a page? And conventionally, we can strip all the way down to pixels…but what if we don’t even land on such an idea? Now bring this analogy to life. The whole of it…thoughts, sounds and colours etc.

Well, if I haven’t scrambled your brain already, I think I better leave it at that. I hope you reflect on the idea that our so-called reflections only appear to do so. Until then my friends, have a beautiful day! Take care!
